"Smokin is Bad"

Here's a piece I made a year ago and this was one of our designs for CitizenFunk

Usually theres a story or inspiration behind it, so I never liked "smoking" and my dad smokes, been dedicated for years. I always thought "smoking" was nasty, dangerous, evil, just made you feel slow etc. anything negative. Well to me you know? By the way I mean slow is because I love break dancing and I don't want that reaction to take a toll on me. And what I saw from my dad, he kinda gets exhausted and starts coughing. Just walking up the stairs to his job(the reason why I know that is because I work with him). Plus carrying delivered boxes upstairs. So thats how I got to create this piece. Hope you like it!

Bored...

So Right now I'm pretty bored. My schedule for work changed, I work in the afternoon now and I have more time to myself now. Anymore more time to myself, I wouldn't have a LIFE AT ALL! Just kidding but seriously, I can only do the same thing so much everyday. So now I get tired easily during the day because I'm not keeping myself occupied but WHATEVER! I'll think of something! NO WORRIES! But I figure this happens to everybody. EH!

Seven Stars!

This is the only seven star hotel in the world!

Name: The Burj Al Arab (which means The Tower of Arabs)

Location: Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Height: 1,043 feet

"Features"

Several features of the hotel required complex engineering feats to achieve. The hotel rests on an artificial island constructed 280 meters offshore. To secure a foundation, the builders drove 230 40-meter long concrete piles into the sand. The foundation is held in place not by bedrock, but by the friction of the sand and silt along the length of the piles.

Engineers created a surface layer of large rocks, which is circled with a concrete honey-comb pattern, which serves to protect the foundation from erosion. It took three years to reclaim the land from the sea, but less than three years to construct the building itself. The building contains over 70,000 cubic meters of concrete and 9,000 tons of steel.

Inside the building, the atrium is 180 meters (590 ft) tall. During the construction phase, to lower the interior temperature, the building was cooled by one degree per day over 6 months. This was to prevent large amounts of "condensation or in fact even a rain cloud from forming in the hotel during the period of construction." This task was accomplished by several cold air nozzles, which point down from the top of the ceiling, and blast a 1 meter cold air pocket down the inside of the sail. This creates a buffer zone, which controls the interior temperature without massive energy costs.

Burj Al Arab characterizes itself as the world's only "7-star" property, a designation considered by travel professionals to be hyperbole. All major travel guides and hotel rating systems have a 5- star maximum, which some hotels attempt to out-do by ascribing themselves "6-star" status. Yet according to the Burj Al Arab's official site, the hotel is a "5-star deluxe hotel". It is the world's tallest structure with a membrane facade and the world's tallest hotel (not including buildings with mixed use) and was the first 5-star hotel to surpass 1,000 ft (305 m) in height.

Lucky like the number 7...

So I just hung out with my high school friends, and they are my friends friends. You know? Like my brothers and sisters from another mother. I'm pretty much thankful to God or whatever, Faith! or like manifest destiny if you believe in that preordain stuff. But yeah I was talking to my good bud and he mentioned about his colleagues not being close with their high school friends anymore and their best friends are from whatever school they go to. I thought to myself "wow, that is sad." I mean thats your high school friends. Those are the years when you start good friendships with one another.
Well... at the time I didn't really realize what I really had, in terms of friendship. But I do now! I'm a lucky guy. Usually people my age don't really have their high school friends as close friends anymore. It's either they just grew apart or went to different school etc. That doesn't really explain the reason why, you know? Like I always thought, people in general are just getting weird these days, like even me in some occasions. I suppose individuals like those are not the people you should be making friends with or people of that sort, then again change is constant.
To sum it up right quick, my sister told me this and I didn't really think about it when I graduated from high school "brother, when you graduate your going to find out who's your true friends are." And thats going to stick to me forever. It just hit me on the side of my head when I graduated, "she was right." My true friends are from high school, and will remain that way. Well I hope to my ending days. So I'm just glad I'm still close to my high school friends because thats a long time line of priceless memories that no one can take away from you and that trust will always be there. Definitely that love for sure.

EW! Nasty Ass Germs!

Did you really think that by cleaning your cell phone with your shirt or a tissue would completely clean out the smears and dirt on your phone? Wrong!

Dangerous bacteria called staph, which can cause everything from pimples to pneumonia to meningitis.

In fact, the oft-used term “potty mouth” takes on a whole new meaning after finding out that some cell phones are dirtier than toilet seats

A Northern Ireland newspaper today has called for a ban on cell phones in hospitals there, because of the threat of germ transmission.

The Belfast Telegraph said a story it ran about bacteria found on cell phones carried by doctors, nurses, and even patients at Craigavon Area Hospital in Ulster, illustrated the need to keep the devices away from patients.

“Hand-washing must be increased, but until a satisfactory means of disinfecting the handsets is established, the only effective remedy is likely to be a suspension of their use by medics and patients in hospitals,” the paper editorialized.


In the British study, mobile phones were indeed found to be a technological Petri dish for tens of thousands of germs. Germs multiply in warm places, so between the heat the phones generate and the germs on face and hands, you've got yourself a dangerous breeding ground.

The filthiest phones, which can spread the dreaded staph bacteria, get the germs from your hands and face.

University of Arizona Microbiologist Chuck Gerba recently tested 25 mobile phones and found the staph bug growing on nearly half.

One of the results was especially shocking. Gerba picked up a phone and said, "This is the dirtiest phone I have ever tested. (It) has somewhere between 10 and 50 million bacteria… if there is ever a new life form on this plant, it will be on this phone."

If you're ever worried about germs making a home on your cell, you can clean it gently with a towelette dampened in soap and water (make sure water doesn’t lean into any openings) or use an antibacterial spray and wipe dry with a clean cloth.

But if that’s too troublesome for your busy lifestyle, Motorola has come up with a clever tactic. Some of their phones have an antimicrobial coating already on them to prevent bacteria from growing. And to keep germs from spreading, keep your phone to yourself.

Gerba warned, "You are not only sharing phones, you are sharing germs at the same time. So anything that becomes mobile, you take with you or you share with other people… [that’s] the way germs are shared with one another."

Benefit of the Doubt...

I have a question for you guys. If you knew how to act and behave in front of people and know whats proper to say to people or your peers, you would be considered a nice individual right? Okie listen to what I have to announce. What if you met a person the opposite of that...

Why does this person have to be really... OBNOXIOUS!!! Not only obnoxious, conceded, bi est and not being respectful to others if that person thinks he/she is not worthy enough. I mean I might know why that persons personality is like that. Maybe insecurity problems?! Just wants attention?! or either parents just didn't give enough creditability when that person needed it when he/she was young or getting teased and getting called a "Muppet". Well everything starts when your an adolescent.

Like if it was any other person I wouldn't really not GIVE A F@#K! Not literally, but I wouldn't care too much. Since I kinda know where he's coming from and might know why that persons approach is that direction, I somewhat sympathize for that person(I really do, sometimes) . I try to give that person the benefit of the doubt. Like any kind hearted person would. But again that person keeps on having that DICK personality to others, I can't even fathom. Well good thing that person is bi est or else I'm going to call out this FOOL! (I break dance) Or either I wouldn't understand that person too much or else I'll be as worse as that person. But it doesn't change the fact that person is A OBNOXIOUS, CONCEDED, DISRESPECTFUL, etc. FOOL! That SMOKES!

Rice Shortage...

MANILA, Philippines, The price of rice is skyrocketing all over the world. This trend will continue until the end of the year, and it is causing panic in many Asian countries, including the Philippines.

Why is rice getting more expensive? The rice supply is decreasing. Floods in many Asian countries have affected the rice output in the region. Rice exporting nations like Thailand and Vietnam have also reduced their exports to prioritize their local needs. On the other hand, demand for rice has been increasing, especially in India and China.

The Philippines is one of the top importers of rice in the world. Rice is a politically sensitive commodity in this country. It is not surprising that reports of a rice shortage have energized political debate and public concern regarding the economic policies of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

If the global supply of rice is dwindling, what is being done to increase local production? In the first place, why is the Philippines, which is predominantly an agricultural nation, importing rice from other countries?

An article entitled "Food Security and Rice" by Dr. Onofre Corpuz provides some historical background on the rice shortage in the Philippines. The article mentions the policies of the government which have weakened the local rice industry.

According to Corpuz, the annual shortages in rice production should not be described as "crises." The Philippines has been importing rice since the 1870s -- this is more than 130 years. He blames government planning on food security for the shortages in rice production.

When Spain decided to open Philippine ports in 1835, it allowed its colony to trade non-rice products to other countries. There was a high demand for cane sugar, molasses, indigo, abaca, tobacco and coffee. Rice farmers began to plant these food items, and by 1870 there was already a rice shortage in the country. The Philippines began importing rice from Indochina. During the 1890s, the Philippines was importing 45,000 tons of rice annually.

Watch Out Kid!

The percentage of overweight children in the United States is growing at an alarming rate. On the whole, kids are spending less time exercising and more time in front of the TV, computer, or video-game console. And today's busy families have fewer free moments to prepare nutritious, home-cooked meals, day in and day out. From fast food to electronics, quick and easy seems to be the mindset of many people, young and old, in the new millennium.

Since the 1970s, the percentage of overweight kids and adolescents in the United States has more than doubled. Today, 10% of 2- to 5-year-olds and more than 15% of children between the ages of 6 and 19 are overweight. If you combine the percent of kids who are overweight with the percent of kids who are at risk of becoming overweight, about one out of three children are affected.

Preventing your children from becoming overweight means adapting the way you and your family eat and exercise and the way you spend time together. Helping your children lead healthy lifestyles begins with you, the parent, and leading by example.

Is Your Child Overweight?

A child with a body mass index at or above the 95th percentile for age and sex is considered overweight. BMI uses height and weight measurements to estimate how much body fat a person has. To calculate your child's BMI, divide his or her weight by his or her height squared, or wt/ht2. (Important: To use this formula for BMI, the child's weight and height measurements must be in kilograms and meters, respectively. If you use pounds and inches, multiply the result by the conversion factor 703.)

An easier way to get your child's BMI is to use a BMI calculator. Once you know your child's BMI, it can be plotted on a standard BMI chart. Your child will fall into one of 4 categories:

  • Underweight: BMI below the 5th percentile
  • Normal weight: BMI falls between the 5th and the 85th percentiles
  • At risk for overweight: BMI between the 85th and 95th percentiles
  • Overweight: BMI at or above 95th percentile

BMI is not a perfect measure of body fat and there are situations where BMI may be misleading. For example, a very muscular person may have a high BMI without being overweight (because extra muscle adds to a person's body weight - but not fatness). In addition, BMI may be difficult to interpret during puberty when kids are experiencing periods of rapid growth. It's important to remember that BMI is usually a good indicator - but is not a direct measurement - of body fat.

These days, you may be hearing more about BMI. Doctors are using BMI during routine check-ups and many school districts are including BMI in their annual health assessments.

If you're worried that your child or teen may be overweight, make an appointment with your child's doctor. If your child is overweight, your doctor may ask about your child's eating and activity habits and make suggestions on how to make positive changes. He or she may also decide to screen for some of the medical conditions that can be associated with obesity (see below). Depending on the child's BMI, age, and health, the doctor may refer you to a registered dietitian for additional advice. For some overweight children, your doctor may recommend a comprehensive weight management program.

The Effects of Overweight

Overweight children are at risk for serious health conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol - all once considered exclusively adult diseases. But overweight children may also be prone to low self-esteem that stems from being teased, bullied, or rejected by peers. Overweight children are often the last to be chosen as playmates, even as early as preschool. Children who are unhappy with their weight may be more likely than average-weight children to develop unhealthy dieting habits and eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia, and they may be more prone to depression, as well as substance abuse.

Overweight children are at risk of developing medical problems that affect a child's present and future health and have direct impact on quality of life including:

  • high blood pressure, high cholesterol and abnormal blood lipid levels, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes
  • bone and joint problems
  • shortness of breath that makes exercise, sports, or any physical activity more difficult and may aggravate the symptoms or increase the chances of developing asthma
  • restless or disordered sleep patterns
  • tendency to mature earlier (overweight kids may be taller and more sexually mature than their peers, raising expectations that they should act as old as they look, not as old as they are; overweight girls may have irregular menstrual cycles and have fertility problems in adulthood)
  • liver and gall bladder disease
  • depression

Risk factors present in childhood (including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes) can lead to serious adult medical conditions like heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. Preventing or treating obesity in children may reduce the risk of developing these conditions as they get older.

What Causes Overweight?

There are a number of factors that contribute to becoming overweight, either alone or together. Genetic factors, lifestyle habits, or both may be involved. In some instances, endocrine problems, genetic syndromes, and medications can be associated with excessive weight gain.

Much of what we eat is quick and easy - from fat-laden fast food to microwave and prepackaged meals. Daily schedules are so jam-packed that there's little time to prepare healthier meals or to squeeze in some exercise. Portion sizes, in the home and out, have drastically increased.

Plus, now, more than ever, life is sedentary - children spend more time playing with electronic devices, from computers to handheld video game systems, than actively playing outside. Television is a major culprit.

Kids younger than 8 spend an average of 2.5 hours watching TV or playing video games, and kids 8 and up spend 4.5 hours plopped in front of the TV or wriggling a joystick. Kids who watch more than 4 hours a day are more likely to be overweight compared with kids who watch 2 hours or less. Not surprisingly, TV in the bedroom is also linked to increased likelihood of being overweight. In other words, once many kids get home from school, virtually all of their free time before dinner, doing homework, and getting ready for bed is spent in front of one screen or another!

And although physical education (PE) in schools can help kids get up and moving, more and more schools are cutting PE programs altogether or cutting down on the amount of time spent actually doing fitness-building physical activities. One study showed that gym classes offered third graders just 25 minutes of vigorous activity each week.

Genetics also plays a role - genes help determine your body type and how your body stores and burns fat just like they help determine other traits. Because both genes and habits can be passed down from one generation to the next, multiple members of a family may struggle with weight.

A greater reliance on "food fixes" to deal with emotions can also contribute to weight gain. Some people tend to eat more when they're feeling sad, stressed, or bored. People in the same family tend to have similar eating patterns, maintain the same levels of physical activity, and adopt the same attitudes toward being overweight. Studies have shown that a child's risk of obesity greatly increases if one or more parent is overweight or obese.

Overcoming Overweight and Obesity in Your Child

The key to keeping kids of all ages at a healthy weight is taking a whole-family approach. It's the "practice what you preach" mentality. Make eating and exercise a family affair. Get your children involved by letting them help you plan and prepare healthy meals, and take them along when you go grocery shopping, so they can learn how to make good food choices.

Avoid falling into some common food/eating behavior traps:

  • Don't reward children for good behavior or try to stop bad behavior with sweets or treats. Come up with other solutions to modify their behavior.
  • Don't maintain a clean-plate policy. Be aware of kids' hunger cues. Even babies who turn away from the bottle or breast send signals that they're full. If kids are satisfied, don't force them to continue eating. Reinforce the idea that they should only eat when they're hungry.
  • Don't talk about "bad foods" or completely eliminate all sweets and favorite snacks from overweight children's diets. Children may rebel and overeat these forbidden foods outside the home or sneak them in on their own.

Here are some additional recommendations for children of all ages:

  • Birth to age 1: In addition to it's many health benefits, breastfeeding may help prevent excessive weight gain. Though the exact mechanism is not known, breastfed babies are more able to control their own intake and follow their own internal hunger cues.
  • Ages 2 to 6: Start good habits early. Encourage kids' natural tendency to be active and offer children a variety of healthy foods. It may take 10 or more tries before a child will accept a new food, so don't give up.
  • Ages 7 to 12: Encourage children to be physically active every day, whether it's an organized sports team or a pick-up game of soccer during recess. Keep your kids active at home, too, through everyday activities like walking and playing in the yard. Let them be more involved in making good food choices.
  • Ages 13 to 17: Teens like fast-food, but try to steer them toward healthier choices like grilled chicken sandwiches, salads, and smaller sizes. Encourage them to be active everyday. If they are not into organized sports, suggest intramural programs, fitness classes such as yoga or pilates, or alternative sport like skateboarding, inline skating, or mountain biking.
  • All ages: Cut down on TV, computer, and video game time and discourage eating while watching the tube. Serve a variety of healthy foods and eat meals together as often as possible. Try to include 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day in their diet, plan healthy snacks, and encourage kids to eat breakfast every day. Encourage your children to try a variety of activities. Don't force any one sport or activity - and help them find what they enjoy and then support them in their efforts.

If you, as a parent, eat well and exercise regularly and incorporate healthy habits into your family's daily life, you're modeling a healthy lifestyle for your children that could last into adulthood. Talk to your kids about the importance of eating well and being active, but make it a family affair that will become second nature for both you and your children. Most of all, let your children know you love them - no matter what their weight - and that you want to help your child be happy and healthy.

Radition Just Smoked You!

Cannabis is often compared to tobacco, with the damage caused by smoking tobacco given as a reason to prohibit use of cannabis. Yet most of the harms caused by tobacco use are due not to tar, but to the use of radioactive fertilizers. Surprisingly, radiation seems to be the dangerous and important factor behind tobacco lung damage.

It’s a well established but little known fact that commercially grown tobacco is contaminated with radiation. The major source of this radiation is phosphate fertilizer.
1). The big tobacco companies all use chemical phosphate fertilizer, which is high in radiactive metals, year after year on the same soil. These metals build up the soil, attach themselves to the resinous tobacco leaf and ride tobacco trichomes in tobacco smoke, gathering in small “hot spots” in the small- air passageways of the lungs.
2). Tobacco is especially effective at absorbing radioactive elements from phosphate fertilizers and also from naturally occurring radiation in the soil, air and water.
3). To grow what the tobacco industry calls “more flavorful” tobacco, Us Farmers use high - phosphate fertilizers. The phosphate is take from a rock mineral, apatite, that is ground into powder, dissolved in acid and further processed. Apatite rock also contains radium, and radioactive elements lead 210 and polonium 210. The radioactivity of common chemical fertilizer can be verified with a Geiger - Mueller counter and an open sack of everyday 13-13-13 type of fertilizer (or any other chemical fertilizer high in phosphate content).
4). Conservative estimates put the level of radiation absorbed by a pack- and- a- half a day smoker at the equivalent of 300 chest X- rays every year.
5). The Office of Radiation, Chemical and Biological Safety at Michigan State University reports that the radiation level for the same smoker was as high as 800 chest X- rays per year.
6). U.S. Surgeon General C Everett Koop stated on the national television in 1990 that tobacco radiation is probably responsible for 90% of tobacco related cancer. 8) . Researchers have induced cancer in animal test subjects that inhaled polonium 210, but were unable to cause cancer through the inhalation of the non - radioactive chemical carcinogens found in tobacco.
7). The most potent non- radioactive chemical, benzopyrene, exists in cigarettes in amounts of sufficient to account fro only 1% of the cancer found in smokers.

Please join us in a celebration of art and the creative spirit as we gather talent for our 3rd annual benefit art show, Power in Numbers 3! Our biggest event of the year, Power in Numbers features artists creating 5″ x 7″ postcard-size artwork in any desired medium and themes of their choice. All works will be priced at $100.00 and 20% of all artwork sales will go towards a benefit of choice. This year’s benefit of choice is the Make-A-Wish foundation.

This show will also mark our official homecoming party into our new space so join us opening night for the festivities!


Buying Instructions for the Opening Night of POWER IN NUMBERS are as follows:

1. Attendees will be given a ticket with a number at the door starting at 6pm. The first 50 will be allowed into the gallery at 7pm. afterward we will be allowing one person in for each person leaving. Those waiting to get in the gallery can wait in the store until your number is called in sequence.

2. After entering the gallery, browse until you have decided on your purchases, take a pen and write your ticket number underneath the piece on the label: “sold to____”. Each person can mark up to 5 pieces. Mark only the pieces you will buy and pay for the artwork immediately after you mark your label.

3. You may pay for your artwork in cash or credit. We will record your name, and contact info, and the piece you purchased on a list for record keeping purposes.
4. Buyers may pick up their purchases the following week when the show ends (May 28). We will also call buyers for pickup after the work is taken down. No artwork will be released without full payment.

If you want to purchase a piece come early to reserve your number.
We start handing out numbers in the store at 6pm the gallery opens at 7pm.

so... This is my first blog entry ever! And I'm bored right now... The reason why I wanted to make a blog in the first place was because I always wanted to talk about random subjects about the world and how different cultures is now a days, art work, events, etc and there probably is a site or blog that has the same purpose but I wanted to start my own! Right now I have no clue what to post or really what to say besides winging it like right now... And so I'm going to end it like this!
